What does housing instability look like for youth in Texas?

Many of our youth experiencing homelessness are living "doubled-up".

The documentary "Worn Out Welcome Mat", developed in partnership with Diane Nilan and Hear Us, Inc., shows us what life is like for these children and youth.  Diane Nilan traveled to various cities in

Texas interviewing families to help better understand the challenges our fellow Texans are facing.

What does housing instability look like for youth in Montgomery County?

Community Youth Outreach (CYO) is striving to better understand what youth homelessness looks

like in Montgomery County.  There is little definitive data on this population, as this group typically

does not interact with standard assistance programs or government agencies.   The Point-in-

Time Count conducted in Montgomery County on January 23, 2014 showed us that of the 617

people counted on that day, 64 were known to be between the ages of 16-24 years of age.

An additional 121 people included in that count did not disclose their age. The six school districts

in Montgomery County reported 115 homeless students, grades 9-12

CYO will be joining with The University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work and University of Texas School of Nursing Youth Count 2.0!  to expand their research to Montgomery County!  This research project will give us the necessary empirical data to better understand this issue, allowing us to create services to eradicate youth homelessness in Montgomery County.  Contact us to determine how you can be apart of this very important research project!

Youth experiencing homelessness

Stability is achieved when one is able to have their basic and psychological needs met. Community Youth Outreach's programs are designed to provide food, clothing, safety, security, sense of belonging, prestige and feelings of accomplishment, empowering youth to reach their fullest potential.

Local youth experiencing housing instability were given cameras and asked to take pictures of

places they slept while homeless.  Their pictures and stories are documented in the "Picture This" photo exhibit and the "Through Their Eyes"documentary produced by HomeAid Houston

and Our City TV.
